Haiti

Sure it's a tragedy - but more to the point: What has Haiti ever done to help itself? Has it ever been a democracy? Have their leaders from Papa Doc on down ever done anything but rule as iron-fisted dictators? We've been giving them AID for decades now. They already have enough of our money.

And it takes 9 months for Obama to decide on whether to put more troops into Afghanistan. It took one full week for him to have a press conference about the Christmas Day Crotch bomber. But when he sees his "own people" suffering and dying on the television, he's in front of the cameras within HOURS and pledging $100 million of OUR money to boot.

What a disgrace - Happy New Year.

Come on Rue-y, how can you even compare those things to the tragedy which occured there?

You are saying we should not help? You think if Bush was president he would have not done the same thing?

No the disgrace is conservatives as yourself that would use this as political fodder. Forget the political bullshit. It is your duty as a good Christian to do something.

Help them??? Who came here during Hurricane Katrina and helped us???? Didn't see the French or German navy bring in anything. The only thing I saw was Haitians looting stores in New Orleans.

Never see the catastrophes which occur in white areas on the worldwide news. Heavy snowstorms in the upper midwest trapping hundreds of thousands without power or food. They only wish to cover the ghetto savages. Ain't it about time the ghetto savage learns to stand up and take care of himself? Instead of crying and howling like a dog for freeloaded help?

It achieved the first successful slave revolt in human history a feat for which the west, particularly the US and France, have never forgiven them. For having the audacity to remove their own chains and TAKE the freedom that is the birthright of every human being, Haiti was strapped with a crushing indemnity to France that amounted to some 90% of its GDP for a full century after its independence. This was followed by the US invasion and brutal 19 year occupation of Haiti beginning in 1915 in which slavery was reintroduced to the island in the 20th CENTURY.

Yes, one goes by the name of Jean-Bertrand Aristide who now resides, against his will, in Central Africa, where he was deposited after being kidnapped by US forces for having the temerity to defy the neoliberal straitjacket imposed upon his nation by the IMF and World Bank (both virtual agents of the US Treasury and Federal Reserve). The string of “iron fisted dictators” that preceded Aristide and the Lavalas Party (now banned) were the legacy of the US occupation and were installed, trained, and funded by the US to serve in a caretaker role for the interests of Wall Street capital and American textile trans-nationals. Aristide and the Lavalas Party were elected by an overwhelming majority of the population in the first free elections in the island’s history in 1990. The democratic reforms he helped to initiate were well on the way to achieving self-sustainability for Haiti for the first time, however, it meant reversing the fortunes of the parasitic Haitian elite and the foreign interests they served... so it all had to go.

Rue with all due respect you should at first educate yourself about Haiti and its relation to the US before you presume to comment upon it. The rapist does not have the right to cast moral judgement upon his victim.

After you have absorbed the material that I’ve linked above I believe we can have a conversation on the subject of Haiti on a somewhat equal footing.
