Targeting Illinois gun owners

Rep. Kenneth Dunkin has legislation in the rules committee requiring that FOID holders go and get $1,000,000 of liability insurance if they own a hand-gun or rifle.

Synopsis As Introduced:

Amends the Firearm Owners Identification Card Act. Provides that any person who owns a firearm in this State shall maintain a policy of liability insurance in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person.

Provides that a person shall be deemed the owner of a firearm after the firearm is lost or stolen until such loss or theft is reported to the police department or sheriff of the jurisdiction in which the owner resides. Provides that the Department of State

Police shall revoke and seize a Firearm Owner's Identification Card previously issued under this Act if the Department finds that the person to whom such card was issued possesses or acquires a firearm and does not submit evidence to the Department of State Police that he or she has been issued in his or her name a liability insurance policy in the amount of at least $1,000,000 specifically covering any damages resulting from negligent or willful acts involving the use of such firearm while it is owned by such person. Effective January 1, 2010.



I'm sure this is just the first volley in the new war against gun ownership in this country. If they cannot do away with guns, they will make owning them prohibitively expensive. Isn't it fun living in a quasi-totalitarian country?

Here's a breakdown of the cost of this additional insurance: According to WikiAnswers, liability insurance for automobile coverage, with the lowest limits possible, (15000/person, 30,000/accident, 5,000/property damage, on average) runs from 40-60 dollars per month.

We'll assume the gun ownership insurance covers accidental or negligent incidents so we'll use the 30,000 limit. To cover $1,000,000 the multiplier is 33.333

That works out to $1,333 per month, or $15,996 per year - just in insurance costs! But the insurance companies might view this as more of a personal liability risk, so I think medical malpractice quotes might be more to the point.

The Professional Liability Committee did a survey of Professional Liability Insurance for Anesthesiologists and found that their coverage of $1,000,000 annually ran $18,112 (1985) up to $20,572 (2005).

That's about right. Spread the word to your fellow friends and co-workers and let them know what's going on. A call to your representative seems to be in order.

You should really think about your comments before you write them. This is another restiction on our freedoms. So many have gotten so used to these restrictions they respond like you do.

I want my family to have a gun or two available to protect themselves when I am not home. Why should I have to pay extra fees for that right?

If I use my gun inappropriately I will pay a high price. And the laws as they exist today and the Monday morning quarterbacking makes almost every use of a gun inappropriate.

I should have the freedom to chase an offender who just broke into my home down the block and shoot him/her. I don't. I should have the right to shoot an offender trying to get into my home. I don't.

After years of bullshit laws designed to assign more rights to the animals, crime pays, and it pays out in huge amounts in Chicago and Illinois.

We are quickly moving backward in society. When employment reaches 20-30% and the criminals in Washington and City Hall continue to rob and steal, the liberals will be wandering around muttering, "where is our obama-messiah?" The rest of us will be well-armed and ready to defend ourselves.

Fuck making the insurance companies rich, and go ahead and revoke my FOID card. It's a joke now and it'll be a bigger joke when the shit hits the fan!

In Illinois, gun ownership is a privledge not a right. They can suspend your gun rights on mere suspicion. (Peterson case) So if you can't afford it, you can't have it.

WRONG.Gun ownership is not a privelage,its a right.FOID is an illegal action by the Illinois government.

Just what is an illegal gun??I mean the Second Amendment guarantees ownership of lets say machineguns,rocket launchers,silencers.Why all the evilness to disarm America??

So where does it say felons and domestic battery offenders can't have guns? As you see the Second Amendment can be adjusted at any given time. They can always vote or write in changes to this amendment and have over the years.

HO Ho Ho, I love the sheep running to buy up all the guns and ammo they can carry. Keep the prices rising. All that old ammo in my garage will pay for my retirement. Stuff I had bought years ago at $6 (45,9's) a box now has tripled in price. Keep the selling going, its the new stock market!

WGN news the other day had a poll on the proposed one million dollar insurance law for gun owners. I was amazed that the totals were more than 90% against the law, less than 10% for the law. Maybe the sheep are learning.

If times get bad, there's always guns that can be taken from those who are armed. During WWII French resistance fighters took lots of weapons from their nazi invaders. Use a 22, pop a guy with a bigger weapon, and its yours.

You are as dumb as they come. Guns and ammo will always go up in price when metal prices rise. Maybe you are too obtuse to notice, but commodity prices have been going up sharply for several years.

Oh, a question for you --- all that ammo in your garage? When you bought it, were you a sheep too? Baaaaaah!
