Its so unfortunate that most cops ain't got the sack like those in the past. Nowadays most cops are just pushovers, afraid of their own shadows. They only come to jobs in force or call for back-up. And if they get hurt they must milk their medical program for months on end. Hey city hall look into this medical system. Maybe its time for a change.

The newbies of today learned that the old "tombstone courage" of riding 99 to an inprogress job meant taking an unnecessary risk.

Plenty of guys still go by themselves to domestics and disturbance jobs. I wouldn't recommend it because it doesn't take much to get hurt or killed. Look at what happened to Officer Francis. It can happen that fast.

Secondly, if you do go above and beyond and get hurt, the city will second-guess your every move and your sacrifice won't mean a thing. Many coppers understand that they aren't 'heroes' - we're only cogs in a great big wheel.

Still, one thing remains constant. The men and women of this city are brave. They're still the only ones who go TOWARDS the sound of gunfire.

How about a power test being required every year? Ever notice that most of the cops who get killed were way out of shape. Require level 3 holsters. Do away with those deputy-dawg style revolver holsters worn by the last dead copper.

Well I see your point about the level 3holsters, but I disagree with you with the mandatory power-tests.

Requiring a power-test means that you're mandating that someone take care of their health. People should still have the freedom to be fat slobs: if that's their choice.

I know you can make the argument that it saves lives, money and increases public safety.

Public safety be damned - if it means less Freedoms for all of us. I'm not a smoker but I don't agree with the smoking ban. I don't agree with much of this NannyState regulatory environment we're in.

The military requires a yearly physical fitness test. Is not the police supposed to do a semi-military organization? The power test the way they have it set up is very easy. Even the weapons qualification is simple. I've seen some at the range who are quite scary when it comes to weapons handling. Most cops it seems only shoot their weapon at qualify time. they just don't think about practice.

In training we're semi-military. But in practice we aren't.

The military does two things very well: breaks things and kills people.

The job of the police is much more nuanced.

It is not the same animal, though there are some structural similarities.
