Gunplay at Marist High School

Chicago police were called to Marist High School (4200 W. 115th st.) on 14-Feb-2008 because a 15-year old black freshman brought a handgun to school and displayed it in the boys' lockerroom. He allegedly discharged it out on the football field when other students doubted that it was a real gun.

The student has been expelled, although the school refuses to comment on the story. Other students have heard that the student obtained the gun as a "gift" from his father for the "student's protection."

I think that this story deserves some public attention. The fact that this kid brought a gun to a catholic school and then was not arrested for it is an outrage. What message is this sending to current students and their families?

Beat 2241 was dispatched to the school on Valentine's Day. The job (event# 0804509956) was coded 19H - the school was advised to recontact police if they decided to arrest the "young man."

Marist has done a wonderful job pressuring news outlets from publishing negative news items. For example, former teacher James Brienzo was arrested in a child sex sting operation but it was never mentioned in the press that he was a long-time Marist high school teacher. Even this Oak Park Journal news item fails to mention this salient fact:

Brienzo, who the OPRF school board has decided not to rehire, was arrested in January after allegedly contacting what he thought was a 14-year-old boy to set up a sexual rendezvous and made lewd advances.

Instead of a teenager, though, the contract was a Wisconsin Department of Justice agent. Brienzo was charged with sexual assault and child enticement.

Brienzo, 46, was hired by OPRF in August, 2000, taught math to freshmen and sophomores and was a coach for some sports teams..

Brother Anthony Iazetti was arrested in Florida after he propositioned an undercover officer for sex in a public park.

More than anything else, these two stories highlight to what extent the Marist school administrators will go to bury embarrassing news items that put the school in a bad light.

I guess I shouldn't be too surprised - The Catholic Church herself is a veritable sarcophagus of buried secrets. If you have a child attending Marist high school, I suggest you call Mr. Pirkle at 773.298.4500 and demand that some public statement be made by the school about this incident.

Pardon the rant, but here goes:

Your post is wrong in several aspects. The biggest error (I believe) is pointing out the race of the student. What the hell does that matter?

Second point. The UUW charge is not determined by the school. It is a state charge with complaints signed by the P/O. The officers and watch commander could have then contacted the Area 2 Detective Division and sought charges for reckless (but not aggravated) discharge.

The beat car may have blown it off, but I doubt it. The sergeant had to come to the scene and you know the watch commander was contacted.

No way that weapons discharge could have been sushed up with other students as witnesses. The story would have grown like wildfire. Sounds to me like the police are to blame not the school. The officers and watch commander should have done better.

Third off. The Brother Iazetti story WAS covered in the news media as I know I read it in the Sun-Times. Otherwise I would not have known about it.

Fourth. The Oak Park Journal on the other teacher probably got its information from the public relations officer at the police department. How would an Oak Park reporter know the connection if he did not cover the high school sports or school beat?

I am actually pretty disappointed in you Rue-y. I thought you much better than the "other guy," and I do not mean Coldie or Shadi. You know who I mean.

The "secrets" of the Catholic Church of which you mention really cannot be so secret if we now discuss them. Yea, things were done wrong in the child abuse scandal, but the CPD has also covered up things in their past.

If you have issues with the Catholic Church talk to your priest (if you are a member) or be fair in your condemnations. You are better than that. Maybe it was all that jazz you listened to as a kid.

Everyone deserves a second chance, and he was only 15...He got expelled anyway, so he received a punishment.

My son attends Marist and I received a letter concerning the issue. At the time of the letter an ongoing investigation was being conducted by both the school and Chicago Police. I asked my son about the incident and he didn't really have much information. I later discovered that the 15 year old offender was in custody and he informed officers that the gun was located in his Dolton residence. A consent to search was obtained and he was charged with UUW among other charges.

THE WHITE KIDS DIDNT TELL ON THE POOR AFRICAN AMERICAN UNTIL A FEW WEEKS AFTER HE SHOT THE WEAPON BY THE FIELDS AT MARIST .
AND THE TACT TEAM WENT TO THIS POOR BOYS HOUSE AND THE GUN WAS IN HIS BOOK BAG.

Lefty:
Where in the hell did you think that I was blaming the police for this? M'thinks that you're projecting your own mistrust of the police, and probably authority figures in general.

Contrary to what you say, the story did spread like wildfire because, despite Marists' attempts at covering it up, it got out anyway.

And at NO POINT did the press connect the dots and tie Iazetti and Brienzo to Marist.

_______

I'd love to know if the gun-toting "youngster" was arrested or not.

Anyone have a last name on hi

He was arrested, charged and kicked out of marist. The school tried to cover it up initialy and wanted to handle it themselves. The police were not notifed until weeks later. This was not the police depts fault it was Marist. Race does matter this is typical behavior for the black man look at the violent crimes most are commited by those people
