Civis Romanus sum

The quote from Cicero means "I am a citizen of Rome."

I mean that in the pejorative sense in that Rome, like America, was a world dominant SuperPower. And that, based on our current socio-political environment, we are going the way of Rome. Luxury, sloth, idleness, immorality, decadence are elements that we share with our ancient Roman compatriots. Luxury, sloth, idleness, immorality and decadence are also the more benign elements that compose the "hip-hop" culture.

Rome was conquered and plundered by Aleric, King of the Visigoths, in 410AD.

"Where's my FUBU toga, yo?"

Watching the Academy Awards last night made me feel like I was seated at the Coliseum - watching a gladiator contest or chariot race. I imagined that I could hear the bored and apathetic crowd cheer at the Gladiatorial Games. The cheers and shouts would rise and fall as a short Roman sword pierced the side of Gaul fighting in the arena. Rome defined debauchery as they engaged in bacchanalian feasts - eating until they vomited, then having group sex sessions with prostitutes and same-sex liaisons. In the "anything goes" Roman culture, people had the time and luxury to devote to doing whatever they wanted. A porous border meant that anyone could get Roman citizenship, and an army made up of 90% mercenaries made sure that when fighting occurred - it wasn't Roman citizens getting killed in battles at various fronts. That, of course, meant that the armies weren't as motivated for action and wouldn't give 100% towards fulfilling their missions. As the borders shrank, the empire collapsed and the decadent governments' tax base evaporated - less resources were available to placate the citizenry with idle time wasters.

The world's great civilizations have progressed through
this sequence: From bondage to spiritual faith; from
spiritual faith to great courage; from courage to liberty;
from liberty to abundance; from abundance to selfishness;
from selfishness to complacency; from complacency to
apathy; from apathy to dependence; from dependence back
again into bondage."

Alexander Tyler (ca.1770)

Sadly, I actually could hear the bored, apathetic and brainwashed Hollywood crowd cheer as a group of no-talent, unintelligible, shiftless whelps skulked off stage after their hip-hop "performance." The standards that these people carry represent the basest elements of our society. Glorifying violence, drug use, sex, murder, revenge, lust, savagery, prejudice and illegitimacy - are what "hip-hop" are all about. As more and more people adopt the faux-"ThugLife" values, the more we'll see a decline in our own sense of what is right and wrong.

This is what provokes Muslims worldwide to see our culture as the vapid expanse of drek that it is.

As we cater to the dumb and mediocre in our society, the more we'll see that become the norm.

I though everyone was a fan of that hip-hop-rap-crap!

After that "performance" I expected at least one drive-by shooting at an awards related party where these mopes went later. Maybe they've not found the bodies yet!

Long live Tupac and Tookie!

Ha! Just like every year before, during and after the VIBE awards - someone catches a beatin' or a .40cal round in the thigh.

And they continue to deny that there is a problem - there is even an underground conspiracy theory that says that an LAPD officer was the triggerman who killed that innocent, pillar-of-the-community - Tupac.

Your analogy of the Roman Empire is right on target. To give a academy award to a song with that title and those mysogonist lyrics was madness! The Motion Picture Academy has lost all credibility and become totally irrelevent(Just like the Grammys.)As a Black man,I was totally embarrased. On the other hand,kudos to the producer,director,and cast of Crash. Well written with a talented cast of actors.Terrance Howard's best performance.I'd just as soon forget "Hustle and flow."

its easy to be ignorant but difficult to be learned. The group that accepted the award came out of left field. did you see the reaction of that lady who sang in crash. either way hip-hop is a mix just like anything else, it seems all of it aimed at what you pointed out I'm sure you're not going to take the time to explore the true artists of hip-hop and to be honest I would rather have it that way. To sell something short on biased views and media exposure leaves me to presume that you choose to be ignorant.

So I presume you hold yourself in high esteem and believe you're 'learned'? I, quite honestly, don't get the point of your post, except to say that it seems you're accusing me of just casting aspirations towards the hip-hop community without knowing or understanding the issues.
I do understand the issues, underlying assumptions and current dilemmas and, I can assure you, I'm right. Hip-hop, rap and other "urban art forms" are vapid wastelands of glorifed violence, racial hatred and materialism.
If you're so enlightened, maybe you could share with us who are the "true artists" of hip-hop? I'd love to see who you name.
And Leftist liberals like you "sell things short on biased views and media exposure" all the time - just look at how moveon.org and The DailyKos have no facts to support the basis of their views. Why don't you try to be fair for a change....

Hey, "Rue", that's very French of you, to have a site honoring Paris, with an anti-illegal immigrant American flag on your page.

Mainly, your spell checker would never have known the difference when you wrote "casting aspirations" instead of aspersions! But then, you probably wrote what you thought, just like the Bush creep when he misuses/abuses language. Also, people who use language like "leftist liberals" have ignorance written all over their language.

May you "rue" the day you honored faux Americanism.

Thanks Albert. You've done exactly what The Left does so well ... you've said something with no point, no purpose and no validity.

America is the best country in the world and the only one with an actual, functioning democracy.

Go fuck yourself - you probably understand that, n'est pas?
